Investigations were on a river, clay and estuarine landscape for a planned land reallocation in the area. Earlier data seemed insufficient. Research concerned soil conditions and genesis, which were greatly influenced by an incursion in 1421. Physical soil conditions (puddling, water capacity, hydraulic conductivity), closely governed the suitability for crop production and the changes in watertable. Their study was combined with a study of grassland vegetation.Other important crops, as wheat, and sugar-beet yielded data which were processed by multifactorial analysis. Combinations of these results and soil survey produced a suitability scheme and suggestions for reallocation and rural engineering, especially for river backswamp soils.
